We at Gym Meals would like to welcome our latest sponsored athlete, Ariel Dencio. Ariel is an accomplished competitive bodybuilder in the IFBB and has an extensive background training clients in the Canberra area.
On top of his dedication and commitment to training and diet, Ariel is a proud husband and father to two children. Below we pick his brain and get to know a bit more about what inspires him and how he got started down the competitive bodybuilding path.
Q: So, tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a personal trainer of 13 years. I am a husband and father of two children. My family is my world. I am a competitive bodybuilder in the IFBB.
Q: What made you want to start bodybuilding?
Arnold Schwarzenegger and finding bodybuilding to be more than just a physical test, but a test of lifestyle and consistency.
Q: What’s your philosophy on training?
Intensity and consistency. Mastering those two things is what yields great results and creates a champion.
''Too many people focus on the competition itself rather than enjoying being in good shape and the process that goes with it. Remember the comp is one day you have your body for a lifetime.''
Q: What’s your general philosophy on diet and nutrition?
Consistency. For your health and results, it's more important to eat clean as a lifestyle, than be strict for a week or a month then fall back to bad habits. The occasional cheat meal or beer is never the issue, it's falling off your plan for days or weeks and binge eating or drinking that sets you back. Since I have found Gym Meals, it has been even easier to stay consistent, and it makes sticking to my diet a lot more pleasant as they taste so damn good!
Rome wasn't built in a day neither was Ronnie Coleman. Build your strength over time.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
Anyone from a champion athlete or bodybuilder; to a busy mother or father still making time to train and push themselves both physically and mentally.
Q: For you, what’s the most rewarding thing about coaching?
I love seeing the change in someone's confidence and see them become proud of their body and physical achievements.
Q: What are the biggest mistakes you see people make when it comes to building muscle?
Trying to go too heavy and not focusing on form and short rests. Yes, you want to lift decent weight and build your strength but not at the expense of technique and blood flow to the muscle. Short rests are key. Rome wasn't built in a day neither was Ronnie Coleman. Build your strength over time.
Q: Any advice for anyone that is considering competitive bodybuilding?
The first and most important thing to learn is your body first. Learn to train consistently, eat consistently and before you know it you will look like a competitor. Too many people focus on the competition itself rather than enjoying being in good shape and the process that goes with it. Remember the comp is one day you have your body for a lifetime.
